How To Prepare a Commercial Auto Insurance Checklist

Some businesses rely on automotive vehicles for the critical parts of their operations. If this is the case for your business, then you may need to invest in commercial automobile insurance. Investing in a commercial automobile insurance policy for your business-dependent vehicles can protect your business with monetary returns should these vehicles get damaged or break down within the regulations of the insurance policy. The first step in getting your business vehicles insured is by creating a checklist for the insurance. Consult multiple policy holders to get a grasp of what the insurance can do for your business.

1. Provide your information. Visit your prospective policy holder and start out by handing him the basic information about you and your business. Get a piece of paper and writer your full name and contact information. In addition, write down the name of your business and your office address.
2. Provide the details of your business. For the policy holder to understand your needs, you will need to provide details about your business. Give him a description of your business, the date the business started, and the registration of the business. If you business is a corporation or partnership, let the policy holder know the other members of the business. Make sure to explain what your business does clearly so that the policy holder will know what he can offer you.
3. Describe the vehicles and their importance in your business. First off, make sure to tell your policy holder the importance of the vehicles to your business. For example, if your business provides hauling services, then tell the policy holder that you have trucks and if something happened to them, then your business will experience hell. In this case, the policy holder will understand the importance of these vehicles to your business. Remember to enumerate all the vehicles that you want to insure. Provide the make, model, year, and Vehicle Identification number (VIN) of each vehicle. If you have a lot of vehicles, create a catalog with all the vehicles, pictures of each vehicle, and the needed information listed therein.

4. Provide a list of people that operate the vehicles. Commercial auto insurance will only become valid if the insured vehicle will be operated by specific people listed in the insurance policy. In this case, list down all the people that will be operating each vehicle that will be insured. Make sure to submit the name, motor vehicle record, and a copy of the driver’s license or permit of each person listed. Bear in mind that each person will be linked to a specific vehicle so be diligent and plan this out.
5. Determine the coverage. Policies for commercial vehicle insurance for limited liability coverage can range from $10,000 to $1,000,000. Consult with the insurance agent or policy holder and determine the best option for your vehicles. Normally, the coverage will be dependent on the importance of the vehicle and its current depreciated value.

Once you have provided all the information needed to your policy holder, it is time for them to draft the policy for your approval. Acquiring coverage for your business vehicles is vital in protecting your business from accidents and damages that can weaken how it operates.

European Car Insurance

Around eight million Brits take their cars to the Continent every year, but many wrongly assume their existing policy provides the same level of cover in Europe as it does here in the UK. Research into European car insurance from moneysupermarket.com found that 39% of motorists weren't aware that many insurers downgrade your level of cover if you take your car abroad.

What protection is available for driving in Europe?

Unless you take out a specific European car insurance policy, chances are you will only be covered for basic road traffic accidents or third party cover. Only a handful of insurers automatically extend comprehensive cover to travelling abroad and some only increase cover if you contact them, even if extended coverage is free.

The basic level of cover is known as an international motor insurance certificate, or a Green Card. If you are involved in an accident in several European countries including Malta, Romania, Poland and Andorra you will need to produce a green card to prevent your car being impounded. Most insurers will provide the Green Card on request, usually with first class delivery to your contact address.

However, the Green Card only provides the minimum level of cover you need for travelling in a European Union country - and in some cases this may be less than third party only cover in the UK.
Get a new car insurance quote now
How can you get the level of protection you need?

To extend the level of cover you get when you take your car abroad, you will usually have to pay an extra charge to your insurer. Many providers offer European insurance that matches the level of protection you have in the UK as an optional extra with cover for up to 90 days of travel in one policy year (coverage periods vary).

Be wary however, as some insurers that claim to offer European car insurance may still exclude certain aspects of coverage. For example, many insurers will not provide legal protection or breakdown cover while abroad. You should also consider the countries that are covered by the policy - insurers may only cover travel in member countries of the European Union.

Rates vary widely and you may need to shop around to find cheap European car insurance. Europe can be more expensive than the UK for repairs and part replacements, and many insurers take into account the type of car being covered and other pertinent factors. Consequently you should read the terms and conditions of your policy carefully before you travel.

Auto insurance is required by law in all states and protects you by paying for damage or injury you cause others while driving your car; damage to your car or injury to you or your passengers in your car from a crash; and certain other occurrences such as theft and vandalism. Without insurance, you risk having to pay the full cost of any harm you cause others with your vehicle.

Personal Injury Protection: This is required in many states. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum required amounts.
Medical Payments: This coverage is available in some states (usually the states without no-fault insurance), and pays regardless of who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person's reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash.
Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by collision.
Comprehensive: This pays for damage to your car caused by "Other Than Collision"; including fire, wind, hail, vandalism and animal strikes.
Uninsured Motorist: This pays damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a hit and run driver.

What Are the Different Types of Auto Insurance

auto insurance
There are a number of different types of auto insurance that are available to drivers. In the United States, auto insurance is mandatory and not a choice. However, drivers can enjoy a number of varying insurance offerings in order to allow them the flexibility in cost and coverage that they are looking for from their insurance company. Not all insurance companies offer the varying types of coverage, so it is very important for you to check with your company to learn the limitations of what they have to offer you.
Liability coverage from an auto insurance company will cover the damage that occurs to other drivers as a result of your actions. There are a few different levels to liability coverage. First, bodily injury liability will cover the cost of another person's medical costs or death if they are hurt in an accident that is found to be your fault. If a person in an accident files a case against you as a result of the accident, liability coverage can provide you with some legal defense. You will want your liability coverage to ensure that if a claim is brought against you, you have enough insurance to cover a judgment without involving your own personal finances or assets.
Property damage liability covers the cost of repair or replacement when you damage someone else's property in an accident if the accident is proven to be your fault. Insurance collectively referred to as comprehensive and collision coverage will cover the cost of repair or replacement of your vehicle in the event of an accident. In some cases, the coverage will also cover the cost of another vehicle if you are not driving your own when the accident occurs.
Comprehensive insurance coverage can also cover the cost of your vehicle if your car is stolen, damaged by animals, a fire or flooding. Specific coverage is limited to the terms and conditions set forth in your insurance policy; as such, individuals need to check with their insurance company for details in their policy.
Underinsured motorist property damage covers the cost of repairs when the negligent party possesses insurance, but the limitations of which would not be enough to repair the damage caused. Underinsured motorist bodily damage covers the medical costs for you, members of your household and passengers in your car when the insurance of the negligent driver does not cover the entirety of the amount needed. Uninsured property damage protects the vehicle of a person who gets into an accident with a negligent driver who does not have insurance.
Uninsured motorist bodily injury protects insurance policy holders, members or their household and passengers in their vehicle from medical costs or the costs of death. This policy will be relevant in the event that an no-fault driver does not have insurance. Only twelve states within the United States offer no-fault insurance, where insurance coverage is covered on the part of the policy holder regardless of whose fault the accident may be. This means that your vehicle or bodily damage will be covered by your own insurance, whether you are the negligent driver or not.

How to Find Cheap Car Insurance

auto insurance
With the rising costs of fuel and just about every other good or service we purchase, many of us are looking for cheap car insurance. When it comes to cheap car insurance most of us are clueless as to how to go about getting a low cost car insurance policy. There are many factors that influence your car insurance costs drastically.
For example, did you know that the type of car you drive will influence the cheap car insurance you're looking for? Or did you know that using anti theft devices will help reduce your over all car insurance costs? A good driving record will allow you to get cheap car insurance?
The deductible is the amount you pay first out of any claim for an accident. The car insurance policy's cost is directly related to your deductible. A lot of people, especially those with a good driving record, who have had their insurance policy for a long time, have never considered varying their deductible. If you have a clean driving record and are prepared for the risk of paying a larger amount in the event of a claim you can save money by increasing your deductible.
Many times you can get cheap car insurance by combining policies with you existing insurance company. For example if you have a home owners insurance policy contact them and ask for discounts for switching your car insurance to them. If you don't own a home perhaps you have renters insurance or life insurance, contact these companies about the savings you could get by switching your car insurance over to them. Most insurance companies are very accommodating to these requests.

How Your Credit History Can Affect Premium Amounts for Your Auto Insurance Comparison.

If you've recently read a government-issued consumer guide about car insurance, you may have noticed that these guides often recommend online auto insurance comparisons as a way to shop for the best insurance policy. That's because the writers of the guides understand that most consumers lead busy lives and need a quick, easy solution to shopping for car insurance. The Internet enables anyone to fill in a short form and quickly obtain general quotes from as many as 10 to 12 insurance companies. Some companies might provide an instant quote while others will e-mail you with a quote and more information.

What you might not realize is that many car insurance providers will consider your credit history and/or rating when determining your premium quote. Credit bureau reporting of good credit/poor credit is no longer just a means of getting a loan or credit card. If you have worked hard to keep your credit score high, then your hard work may pay off for years to come by saving you dollars not only on loan interest, but also car insurance premiums.

Why Does Credit Matter to Car Insurance Companies?

It's plain and simple....there's a direct correlation between a person's credit/loan behaviors and the number of claims they may incur. Based on years of research, many insurance companies feel that consumers with a higher credit rating are less likely to incur high losses in insurance claims. Basically, if you pay your bills on time faithfully for years, then you're more likely to be a careful driver and of course, pay your insurance premiums on time as well. Not to mention folks with a high credit rating tend to be middle-aged or older, and therefore are in the safer driving age range!

Is it Legal for Car Insurance Companies to View Your Credit History?

Yes, it is perfectly legal under the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. This act states (in a nutshell) that consumer reporting agencies are to use reasonable procedures to meet the needs of commerce for credit, insurance, personnel, and other information. In other words, insurance companies have just as much right to obtain your credit score and history as do creditors and potential employers.

Though some car insurance providers will consider your actual credit reports, others may use what's called an "insurance credit score." This score is created using various factors such as your public records, type of credit you have including store cards, credit cards, finance company loans, etc., unused credit, open lines of credit, credit inquiries, past payment history, and the length of your credit history. This score helps predict the likelihood of anticipated insurance losses, sort of like lenders determining whether or not you are a high-risk borrower.

When you compare car insurance, be sure to ask how your credit score will affect your insurance premium with each company. If you have very good credit, look for insurance providers that put a lot of weight in credit ratings. This can give you leverage when obtaining quotes from these companies.

Keep in mind that there are other factors that will determine your premium when you compare auto insurance. Auto insurance comparison companies will also consider the type of vehicle you drive, your age, your driving records, where you live, and whether you are eligible for various insurance premium discounts. The type of coverage you need as well as your deductible will also affect your premium rates.

Car insurance comparison websites provide a wonderful opportunity to find the insurance company that's right for you. Take advantage of this free and easy tool, and use your good credit as a way to maximize your savings!
